(Names have been changed for privacy): Last month, we received a call from Sheila, whose brother, Tommy, experienced an anoxic brain injury and, within a few days after being admitted to the hospital, was diagnosed “brain dead”. Doctors wanted to stop treatment, but the family wasn’t ready, feeling the decision to end her brother’s life was rushed – a decision they knew could never be changed. The doctors pushed back, and that’s when Sheila contacted the Life & Hope Network’s Crisis Lifeline. After speaking with Sheila and assessing the situation, we immediately connected the family with a Network allied attorney. Once the attorney was involved, the hospital began cooperating and continued treating Tommy. We learned that Tommy did pass away, but his death occurred by allowing nature to take its course. The family felt blessed for their extra time with Tommy and that he peacefully passed rather than the doctors forcing the family to stop his care to cause his death. If you can please keep Tommy and his family in your prayers.  Since 2005, Protecting the Vulnerable Determining whether to stop treating a family member is a challenging and emotional decision. However, too often, we must trust a stranger to decide the value of our loved one’s life. As in Tommy's situation, when your life is deemed no longer worth living, you have little to no authority to contest that judgment. Not everyone agrees on what makes a worthy life, so this can lead to terribly stressful situations, with the patient and their family’s lives left to the judgment of a medical “expert” or an ethics committee with a competing interest in efficient resource allocation. And what about patients having to worry about falling victim to prejudice? What if the person deciding whether you should be allowed to live has a problem with your religion, race, or political orientation? It is absurd to think that even the most accomplished medical professional would have any meaningful insight into what a life worth living might be for someone else. “Where There’s Life, There’s Hope” When a family is not receiving the care or treatment they want for their loved ones, the 24/7 National Crisis Lifeline provides immediate help. For more than 18 years – and over 4,000 patients and families – we have been advocating for the medically voiceless, increasing yearly, with 2023 being no different. It is why we need your financial support, so we can stand with family members who wish to make life-affirming decisions for their loved ones rather than those who are — at the end of the day — strangers to these patients. Advocating for Families and Their Loved Ones Your generous donation of any amount, whether its $25, $50, $100, or more, will support the work of the Life & Hope Network and our Crisis Lifeline, providing an immediate response to desperate families who need critical help. Indeed, your financial contribution (click here to make a donation) connects you with Terri and our mission, defending patients who deserve proper care, compassion, and love. Please know how sincerely grateful we are for your kindness.
