URGENT: Man gives thumbs up to LIFE but wife and pastor say NO Inbox Life Legal Defense Foundation via mta-bbcspool.convio.net URGENT: Man gives thumbs up to LIFE but wife and pastor say NO Life Legal is working with the family of Jason, a man in his early 40s who suffered a brain injury after a complication from brain surgery less than six months ago. Jason can breathe on his own, but relies on a feeding tube for nutrition and hydration. A brain rehab center recently evaluated him and said he is an excellent candidate for therapy. Jason’s wife wants to discontinue his care and authorize the removal of his feeding tube. She insists that “he wouldn’t want to exist in a body like this.” Even though Jason’s parents and siblings want to care for him, under the state’s statutory hierarchy scheme, the wife is his designated decision-maker. What exactly does “a body like this” mean? Jason can recognize his family and tries to communicate with them. When his sister recently asked whether he wants to continue treatment and receive rehabilitative therapy, he responded with a thumbs up. What is especially disheartening about this case is that the wife is a practicing Christian and has the full support of her pastor to dehydrate and starve Jason to death. Even though the pastor never talked with Jason or his wife about their beliefs and wishes regarding health care, he believes Jason would have “no trepidation” about turning over control of his life – and death – to his wife. But Jason never executed an advance directive naming his wife as his decision-maker. Even when he was admitted to the hospital for brain surgery, he did not expressly relinquish control over his health care decisions to anyone else, including his wife. I realize most people, including pastors, do not have training on the ethical and biblical parameters for removing life-sustaining care. Many people are not aware that food and water is not extraordinary care, but rather is basic care and that we are morally obligated to provide that care. In other contexts – including war – deprivation of food and water is a crime against humanity. The good news is that we have an excellent team fighting for Jason. Life Legal attorneys have extensive expertise with these types of cases. Our paralegal is a stellar researcher and provides invaluable support. And we recently brought on a registered nurse who has clinical experience in caring for people with brain injuries. He knows firsthand that even those with a poor initial prognosis can make dramatic improvements – as long as their lives are not cut short. Please stand with us as we fight for the lives of those whose lives are threatened because someone else has decided they are no longer worth living. This week alone, we are fighting for the lives of several people like Jason – people in their 30s and 40s – as well as children like baby Olivia. Would you please consider making a tax-deductible donation of $25, $50, or even $100 today? We – and our clients – are so grateful for your faithful prayers and your generous support. And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?” And the King will answer them, "Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:37, 39-40 PLEASE DONATE TODAY!
