Life Legal attorneys appeared in court last Friday on behalf of the fiancé of a young woman who was threatened with the removal of life-sustaining care. The young woman, “Juliana,”* went into cardiac arrest following a severe asthma attack in January. She was rushed to the hospital where she was resuscitated and intubated. A few days later, our client asked the hospital about Juliana’s condition and whether she was sedated. Her attending physician snapped back, saying, “Absolutely not. There’s no point. She’s NEVER going to breathe on her own again and she is NEVER going to wake up.” The doctor then urged Juliana’s fiancé to remove the ventilator, which most likely would have ended her life. When our client sought a second opinion, he was cut off from all visitation and access to information about Juliana’s condition. We tried to work with the hospital directly to continue care, but the hospital had appointed Juliana’s estranged mother as her decision-maker and would not return our calls. We filed a lawsuit against the hospital on February 17 and the following day we obtained a court order requiring the hospital to continue all care and treatment, including nutrition. We recently learned that Juliana started breathing on her own! During the hearing on Friday, the judge granted our request for unrestricted visits for Juliana’s fiancé. Yesterday he was finally able to see her in person. She is awake and is trying to speak! Our next hearing is on April 22. Please pray that Juliana continues to recover and that she can be moved to a facility that will provide rehabilitative therapy.
