Supporters of Bobby Reyes along with his family continue to work for his transfer out of University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. The 14-year old patient who suffered a brain injury after an asthma attack that led to a "brain death” diagnosis continues to show signs of life. On September 21st Bobby Reyes suffered a cardiac arrest after experiencing an asthma attack and had to be airlifted to the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, where doctors diagnosed Bobby as being “brain dead”. Within a week’s’ time of Bobby’s brain injury, doctors informed his parents, Sarah Jones and Jose Reyes that their son’s ventilator would be removed ending his life. Bobby Schindler, President of the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network believes the Reyes case is representative of a very deep problem within the US healthcare system – particularly those issues surrounding the rush to end the life of patients within the confines of hospital corporations, which have a vested financial interest in discontinuing life. “Families enduring the emotional trauma of a life-or-death crisis of a loved one should be able to trust that they will be listened to by doctors and reasonably accommodated when asking for more time before making an irrevocable decision,” stated Schindler. Bobby’s parents, not wanting to make the decision to end their son’s life so quickly, are simply asking for more time, and doctors are duty-bound to provide all potentially efficacious treatments that might help with the patient’s recovery.” Schindler has been invited to attend Tuesday’s 10:00 a.m. hearing at Washtenaw County Trial Court, Ann Arbor supporting the parent’s efforts to receive more time so they can locate another facility that will continue Bobby’s treatment.
